Round by round breakdown
McGregor delivered on his promise to come forward, forcing Mayweather back to the ropes. With his right hand slung low, the Irishman did not look fazed by the undefeated fighter in front of him. One uppercut in particular landed flush.
Mayweather gradually came into the round but when he threw a body shot, McGregor merely stepped back and smiled before putting his hands behind his back.
McGregor was warned for the first time for hitting on the top of Mayweathr’s head. Again the Las Vegas resident was forced back but he had proven time and time again he was comfortable there.
The Irishman switched stances for the first time and continued to land pot-shots, although Mayweather managed a right of his own.
10-9 McGregor (20-18)
Another warning for hitting to the back of the head, but McGregor landed a right before tying up Mayweather.
Then a left uppercut found its mark and although Mayweather retaliated, it wasn’t enough to prevent another round slipping away.
10-9 McGregor (30-27)
McGregor once again backs up Mayweather and lands to the body but the former five-weight world champion claims a low blow.
The UFC star gets away with yet more shot to the head before Mayweather sprung into life as McGregor showed signs of tiring. McGregor did land a solid left as the seconds ticked by.
10-9 Mayweather (39-37)
McGregor roughed up Mayweather in the clinch and a minute went by with little action. There didn’t seem to be much ‘pop’ in McGregor’s punches as he pawed at his opponent.
Mayweather stepped on the gas and began to land in the final 60 seconds as McGregor wilted. Mayweather pushed the Irishman after the bell as he reduced his arrears still further.
10-9 Mayweather (48-47)
McGregor came forward at the bell and was punching Mayweather from behind. The referee stepped in to separate the fighters but issued no warning.
Mayweather launched an attack of his own, forcing the debutant backwards. McGregor began to find a second wind but it wasn’t enough to prevent Mayweather leveling the score.
10-9 Mayweather (57-57)
The fight was becoming messy by this stage but the tide looked to have fully turned. Mayweather couldn’t miss as he walked down McGregor, forcing him to hold on.
The right hand in particular was finding its mark with alarming regularity.
10-9 Mayweather (66-67)
This was a different Mayweather from the one who started the fight, clearly at that stage he was finding his feet and sussing out the opponent in front of him.
McGregor was still landing the odd shot but Mayweather remained in control, landing a neat one-two midway through the round, and then a sharp left. McGregor’s punching power had been lacking thus far.
10-9 Mayweather (75-77)
McGregor comes forward and troubles Mayweather but again he ends up behind him, attempting to land to his face. The referee admonishes him yet again but doesn’t dock a point.
Mayweather piled on the pressure and the crowd rose as one. McGregor stayed out of trouble but his face was marked up and he looked tired, but his chin somehow held firm.
10-9 Mayweather (84-87)
Surely the end was near now and Mayweather came forward. He rocked McGregor, and again, forcing him into the ropes.
The Irishman was finished, and the referee stepped in, and the crowd, strangely, erupted.
